Hey Dennis.  Thanks for the great idea.  How do you "require" that students submit this list of references?  Do students earn points towards their final paper by submitting their references?  Do they lose points if they do not submit their list on time?  Rod

Rod,
I also require a list of references earlier in the semester. This assignment gives me a chance to give them individual feedback on the appropriate use of references and on use of APA style. Before that assignment is due I schedule a class session with one of our reference librarian. She teaches them how to use the most  appropriate search engines available on our campus and she provides a good warning about how long ILL takes.
My best
Dennis

Rod Hetzel asked:

What are your policies for the types of references
that students can use in literature reviews?  Do you allow websites or other online references?

Although I'm just a novice at teaching, I picked up an easy way to resolve this issue from a former instructor.  I simply require the students to submit hard copies of the minimally acceptable number of articles for my approval early in the semester.  That way I can "explain" the difference between peer-reviewed journals and the other options while the student is really interested in understanding the difference.
