The saving grace in your colleagues dilemma is that the requirement was
clearly stated in the syllabus. Even so, your administration may cave in
depending on how craven they are and how loudly the student complains. I
don't have a participation grade, but my wife who teaches Spanish does and
it counts at least 25%. She has flunked students who got Cs on exams but did
not come to class or participate when they did. A couple complained but were
unsuccessful because the requirement was stated on the syllabus. Our dean is
reasonably supportive, although he did pressure her to change the grades.
When she refused, he supported her. Good luck to your colleague. Does he/she
have tenure? Sad to say, but it probably matters.
