A "melon-Collie" baby
On a more serious note, I have a question for all of the personality psychologists out
there in TIPS land. I've had a number of students who have wanted to write papers on
Hippocrate's model of temperaments (sanguine, melancholic, phlegmatic, and choleric).
This would be an appropriate topic for a History of Psychology class, but these
students have wanted to write papers that view this approach as a contemporary model
that is viable and useful for understanding personality. I think they are likely
influenced by popluar books in the Christian world such as "Spirit Controlled
Temperament" by Tim LaHaye and "Getting Along With Almost Anybody" by Marita Littauer.
The authors of these texts do not seem to put much stock in the underlying causes of
these temperaments (humors), but do seem to take more of a trait approach and just
stick to the original characteristics of each of these temperaments. As far as I can
tell, however, the only groups of people that seem to value this approach are
Christians and astrologers. My understanding is that this approach has been
rightfully relegated to the history of psychology because there has never been any
compelling empirical support for this model.
What is the current thinking among personality psychologists about this model of
temperaments? Are some of the current models of temperament/personality, such as the
MBTI and the Keirsey, more psychometrically and conceptually sound than Hippocrate's
model? Are there any scales that measure Hippocrate's temperaments? Am I missing
something?
Thanks in advance.

And I did part of his job for him by doing the search and verifying that
it returns relevant hits. Alas, he still complains.
Woe are us!
