Perhaps because the student is less likely to bother consulting
the book if s/he has been handed the answer to the basic question w/o
doing so?
Call me old fashioned, but I tend to believe that a student
should be held responsible for _reading_ the book. It's my job to
clarify and expand on the material in the text--not to read it to the
student so s/he won't have to bother doing so him/her-self.
Besides, research is a basic skill--surely, long before you
earned your PhD you became aware of that. Personally, I would feel
rather backward asking others to do my research for me--but your mileage
may vary.
