A couple of years ago, I did send a box of books to an African country
(Gambia?), to a TIPSter on the faculty there. It cost about $40. (My
charitable contribution, I rationalized.) I emailed her a couple of times
to ask if they'd arrived. The last email I got from her said they hadn't
arrived yet, but there was great unrest in the country, things were very
dangerous on her campus and she was leaving her office to go home where it
was safer. I never heard from her again, and have worried about her ever
since.

I've searched my records for her name, but don't seem to have her name
anymore. I think it got buried about two crashed computers ago. Her first
name was definitely Gertrude, and the last name may have been Mwambe. I'd
love to hear from her, or any information about her.

Anyhow, sending textbooks out of the country isn't easy and I'd think
contacting the embassy of a country in need might be a good call.

And of course, sending them to Jim Matiya in Illinois is a lot cheaper. And
you know they'll have a good home and an appreciative receiver. Here's his
address:
