Title: Student Led Discussions
Cheri: I regularly use such a system and it is well received by students.  I require students to prepare a discussion question over each of the various readings for the course and bring them to class each session. After a brief lecture, I call on a student at random to lead the discussion.  The student reads the question to the class and recognizes those who wish to contribute.  If nobody volunteers, the student leader calls on selected classmates to give an opinion.  By the way, this results in a much higher rate of reading of the assignments.  I explain the rationale for the assignment (teaches them to read thoughtfully and to be able to lead a discussion on something they have read, etc.).  I am present, of course, when they lead the discussion and interject comments or information to further the discussion as needed.  you can have them submit the questions in advance to assist them in formulating good questions, but I seldom have found that to be necessary.
Best Wishes.  Gene Walker

Subject: Student Led Discussions

Last semester I had students lead discussions for a portion of the semester. Many of my students said that they did not "learn much" from the student-led discussions. I have heard other students also complain about other professors that use this technique. From my perspective, I thought that they would be a good way for students to learn oral presentation skills and it avoids constantly lecturing. Does anyone have any insight on how to make these more effective or has anyone had students report enjoying student-led groups?

Cheri
