Norepinephrine is noradrenaline and adrenaline is epinephrine. There was a copyright on the name "adrenaline" for a long time, so investigators used the other terms. Technically speaking hormones act at a distance from the place they are activated, neurotranmsitters operate in close proximity. Generally speaking, melatonin is a hormone because it acts at a distance. Noeprinephrine and epinephrine could be either. Secreted from the adrenals they act as hormones, in the brain as neurotransmitters. I don't have the citation, but I think I read recently that melatonin works at some CNS sites, and hence would be a neurotransmitter under these circumstances. Obviously difficulty arises when one tries to operationalize the terms, "at a distance" and "in close proximity", but alas, the world is inexact. For example, how many terms exist in various disciplines for hippocampus and limbic system?

Student QuestionGood morning all:

I have a couple of student-initiated questions with which I need some help. First, a student asked why most of us swing our arms as we walk.

Second, a student asked if melatonin produced by the pineal gland is considered a hormone or a neurotransmitter and another asked about norepinephrine and epinephrine, produced by the adrenal glands; again are these hormones or neurotransmitters?

And I have a question: Are norepinephrine and epinephrine also called adrenaline and noradrenaline? Is there a distinction between them?

Thanks for the info in advance. It's appreciated!!
