I don't classify myself as a child psychologist, but I have
always been impressed with Fred Rogers, for several reasons. One, he
tackled socil issues such as war, divorce, working parents, fear of
dentists, fear of flushing toilets, and so on. (Sesame Street got in a
rut on cognitive development).
I agree with your comments on the social issues he tackled, but is important to give credit to Sesame Street for being the first to tackle the issue of death, especially considering the age of its audience, when Mr. Hooper (one of the early characters on the show) died. At the time, they received many acknowledgements for their sensitivity and for being willing to discuss the issue and not simply write the character out of the program.
