As a child, I LOVED Mr. Rogers although I found sesame street "silly" (3 yr old for patronizing). From the psychologist perspective Sesame Street is reasearch based, quality programming, I don't actually remember discussing Mr. Rogers expllicitly (I always had the sense that he wasn't all that highly regarded) although many of the principles we studied in development were beautifully illustrated or addressed in his programs. I think though that it is from the perspective of parent that I most appreciate him. My child enjoys/discusses the programs, I approve of her watching him, and I not only tolerate but enjoy watching them myself. She is just entranced when he explores the world of dance, and music, and apparently learned how to paint (broccoli and dressing on table) from watching his calligraphy segment.
I was astounded to find that he went to college in florida - what was his degree???

Laura Berg's textbook, Development through the Lifespan, which I'm using now, says:
"When different types of programs are compared, ones with slow-paced action and easy-to-follow narratives, such as 'Mr. Roger's Neighborhood' and 'Barney and Friends,' lead to more elaborate make-believe play. Those presenting quick, disconnected bits of information do not (Singer & Singer, 1998; Tower et al., 1979)."
