Hi, Michael. As the mom of an '01 grad, I can answer that. No, the cadets do not retrieve the hats. Kids under a certain age gather at the other end of Michie Stadium, and are allowed to rush in and gather a hat as a souvenir. It's a huge thrill for them.
Because I'm a sentimental mom, I talked my daughter into buying a new hat for the toss. I wanted the one she had worn, especially since they spend hours and hours polishing the brass emblem on the front.
