I started reading you for a ed-psych class assignment about a year ago and haven't stopped yet. Mind if I vent on you and let off steam? I've got to let it out. Talking with my friends isn't enough. It's like complaining to a mirror. All I get is a bunch "yeah, I agree, but you can't do anything." And, my adviser thinks I'm too sensitive and unreasonable, is too afraid of his job to say or do anything. The same goes for a young prof I spoke to who won't do a thing to threaten her race for tenure. No one here really wants to listen. Their advise is to do what they do: shut up, grin, and bear it. I feel like I'm being sacrificed at the altar so they don't have to buck the system and protect their precious academic asses. That means keep their jobs.".............................
This might be the most singularly useless comment a student could write. For all her ranting, I'm not at all sure what this student seems to want except commiseration vis a vis her personal situation. There should certainly be a few faculty in her dept. who might befriend her: her adviser or a professor who has taught her in a small class (or multiple classes) and, therefore, might have the chance to get to know her. But chastising all faculty for "not getting to know me as a person" is, frankly, childish. And may I remind everyone that in the real world, it's the faculty who teach 100+ students in a lecture section that make it fiscally possible for people like Louis to teach small sections where he can "get to know his students as persons." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Edward I.
