Hi Gary- I agree completely with your response to Louis' continuting condemnation of us "lesser folk". What is lacking here is any sort of replicable data that would indicate that Louis' teaching style is significantly better than any of the styles that we adopt. In an effort to find independent verification of the value of Louis' style I looked him up on ratemyprofessors.com. Interestingly, He has NO ratings from any of his students. Curious that someone who claims to have had such a profound impact on student lives has never had one student go on line to tell the world just how wonderful he is. Why is it that the rest of us get public ratings from students (some good-some bad) but that Louis gets none?
All best, -Don. What irritates me (and based on the responses to your posts) and many others on this listserver is YOUR holier than thou attitude. You continuously come across (forgive the quote from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) as though you have vision and the rest of us wear bifocals. If you are really concerned about "the less than cordial and collegial halabaloo," you should look in the mirror and reflect on how you respond to those of us who disagree with you. Your are posting to a psychology teachers listserve. As noted in a previous email, we as trained scientists, have understanding of research methods and statistics, including sampling. An anecdote from a single or few students may be interesting but it provides no usable information about the population. A case study may give us a reason to reflect and go on to determine whether there is a real phenomenon reflected by that person. However, in and of itself, a case study does not provide us with the kind of information you appear to extract. If you are looking for that kind of unqualified support for your anecdotes, you are in the wrong place. Gary J. Klatsky, Ph. D. It is that some are taking it so personally as if Majorie or I am attacking your personhood or professionalhood. It is simply a letter by a rising Honors Senior raising some issues that already have been raised about academia in the CHRONICLE and CHANGE, in the Wingspan and Boyer Reports. If you want to pause, fine. If you don't, that's also fine. If you see no cause to pause, why be caustic?
