We need to also be very careful about lumping all athletics together and realize that many coaches do not get paid big bucks and they do build character. As a female hockey player in grad school, our coaches did not get paid and volunteered their time. We also had to pay for our own ice time and it was always late at night. I was a late comer to sports and that experience taught me the value of team sports. We lost to every team (except Ohio State : ) ) but we always had a great time on the ice and I learned the value of athletics.
