But it seems to have run rampant during this period.

But isn't that the point. All revealed religions have (at their heart) the same basic tenets; love god above all others, love thy neighbor as thyself, do unto others ... yadda, yadda, yadda. But look at all of the perversions of these basic tenets (now sticking out my neck a wee bit) in attempts to gain power, not converts, and the results were all of the "bad religion" practices that have been common and can be verified as far back as we have written history.
