Good morning TIPSters! My understanding of the point-biserial correlational procedures is that it is used when one of the variables is dichotomous (e.g. female vs. male; psych majors vs. non-psych majors). I have a colleague who had a data set in which she has a "trichotomous" variable (i.e., "upper" "middle" "lower"). Am I correct in assuming that you could encode that variable as "3" "2" and "1"? I should know this information, but fortunately perhaps, I deal mostly with ratio or interval data in my research. Thanks in advance for your thoughtful feedback!
