The numbness and tingling can also be indicators of other things--for example, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause direct compression of the nerve. Circulatory problems, especially in the extremities, can result in numbness and is especially dangerous for someone with diabetes because that person may not be aware of a penetrating injury, and with reduced circulation even a splinter can lead to gangrene. Someone who falls into an alcohol-induced "stupor" may end up with some serious problems from compression and is not alerted to the pain because he or she has already anesthetized him- or herself. Someone who uses a wheelchair must also be very aware of the potential for compression sores...but I could go on and on about this. Again, I hope this helps. Carol
