Base rates, folks.
If 1% of the population is schizophrenic and 1% is blind (I'm just making these
numbers up) then .0001 of the population would be both (assuming they are
independent of each other). I'm not sure anyone would actually be able to
establish whether there are *any* blind schizophrenics, and it would be so rare
a combination by chance, that one might well miss the few that exist. On the
other hand, if one knew where to look, one might be able to falsify the
contention (if I may be momentarily Popperian). If a relatively large proportion
of people living on the streets are schizophrenic (as is often claimed) and
people living on the street are more likely to mistakenly drink rubbing alcohol,
thinking it will give them a cheap buzz (as is sometimes reported), then one
might well find a blind schizophrenic or two. I doubt schizophrenia protects one
from the toxic effects.
