Actually, MY pet peeve is grader's pet peeves. I have been through too many workshops in which people felt they simply could not grade a paper for argument, sense, organization, or other thing far more crucial to reader understanding. Correcting these peeve-provokers was like a compulsion in that nothing else could be done to the paper until they were all marked and appropriately chastised.

Actually, the comment about more substantial contributors to reader understanding is a personal opinion and not based on any data. It really is an empirical assertion. I would be astonished if anyone had data showing that use of data in the singular contributed more to reader confusion than lack of organization.
