With respect to the problem of plagiarism, there is a newer technological development that really worries me; not so much for what it can do now, but what such technology may lead to in the not so distant future. I am referring to a newly patented software that can literally create new poetry from the work of others (see NY Times article at http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/24/technology/24patent.html). Consider the following description from the NY Times article: "On Nov. 11, Mr. Kurzweil and John Keklak, an engineer, received patent No. 6,647,395, covering what Mr. Kurzweil calls a cybernetic poet. Essentially, it is software that allows a computer to create poetry by imitating but not plagiarizing the styles and vocabularies of human poets."
Surely, teachers and professors who teach poetry must be concerned.
I just wonder when the cybernetic essay/paper writer will materialize.

A story in today's New York Times about cheating features a photo of a water
bottle with the inside of the label used for a cheat sheet. Very ingenious.
One more thing we have to start watching out for, in addition to the bottom
of a baseball cap's bill. Of course, those are almost old-fashioned
compared to calculators programmed with notes and electronic messages
exchanged with a student outside the classroom. But the two final
comments - that adults turn a blind eye to cheating and don't want to do
anything about it, and that the best way to change the behavior is to make
cheating socially unacceptable, may be as old-fashioned as writing notes on
the palm of your hand.
