Title: Two Student Questions

I had 2 questions from students the other day that I could not answer hopefully you folks can help.

1) This is an old one to which I've never found a satisfactory  answer: Is there an adaptive significance to the contralateral organization of the brain. If so, what is it? Or is it just a peculiarity of neural development.

2) In Broca's (and Wernicke's) aphasia is there any effect on mathematical ability? The student really asked the question because math & music are often spoken of as "universal languages." I said that music was not affected and I suspected that math was not either and that in this context (i.e., music & math) the term "language" is more metaphorical than actual.  Was I right????
