Hi Paul and others,
Speaking of being Supreme Commander of your department, I'm
wondering how many of us do indeed have nicknames. At a conference a couple
of years ago, students were calling each other JaneDog, BillDog, etc., and I
overheard them referring to me as "HatchDog". I liked it, and asked if I
could keep it; they were at first embarrassed, but were happy that I wasn't
offended. I now tell students they can call me Dr. Hatcher, Joe, or, if
they are daring...HatchDog. Some student do, though mostly in emails...
This may be more of a prerogative of male professors, I know...
