As an over-50 [over-60, actually, but whos counting? Anyway, like most people, I also look young for my age :-) ], I quite agree! On February 22 I posted what I though was an informative excerpt from Charles Mackays chapter on animal magnetism, mesmerism, suggestion and placebo effects, thinking that the fact that someone could be writing in 1841 with far more insight than many a commentator nowadays was of some interest, and was disappointed that it got not a peep of a response from TIPSters. In recent decades there have been heated debates (not to mention some appalling miscarriages of justice) arising from the fact that therapists, social workers, etc, have failed to appreciate how easily both young children and adults can be influenced by the way they are questioned, and concerns about material obtained (e.g., recovered memories) under hypnosis. It is surely a sobering thought that all this is a repetition of debates that occurred in the early 1800s, then again in the late 1800s (Charcot, Bernheim, et al). Yet European and American society has had to go through it all again as if exactly the same issues had never been thrashed out a century and more ago!
