Thank
you for this bit of history Christopher. It is ironic that we
psychologists have endured the random diatribes of a historian, but have not had
the opportunity to present history in the context of psychology. I would
recommend the following URLs for additional examples. These were
found by searching Google for "Leon Kamin Joe McCarthy." Please, Louis,
put down your Tootsie-Pop and take some time to read them.

Scoles, Ph.D. Director, Arkansas Charter School Resource Center Associate
Professor of Psychology & Counseling University of Central
Arkansas (501)

Let's see. James McKeen Cattell, one of
the most important of the early American psychologists, was summarily
dismissed from Columbia Univeristy because of his public opposition to the
draft during World War I. Tenure might well have prevented that. I leave it as
an exercise to the reader to consider what would happen to professors who
opposed *current* the U.S. government's policies (both foreign and domenstic)
without the protection of tenure. (Indeed, I leave it to other TIPSters to
remind Louis?? of what *has* happened to a few professors who have spoken out
against the "official" myth of Americna benevolence around the world over the
past couple of years.)
For god's sake, Louis, you claim to be an
historian. Please take the time to learn a little about the history of tenure
before spouting off in your usual "random" way.
Regards,
