I'm interested in this issue also. I can tell you what we do here. If you supervise students for Individual Studies you get no compensation unless it's done in the summer. In the summer you get $400 per student. I assume this is due to the hours being included in regular full time tuition during the academic year but in the summer students are paying by the hour. Interestingly, most of our faculty do not seem to be aware that if the Ind. Studies had been done in the summer they would have received pay. I found out when I actually received the check. Of course, most of our students want to do the IS option during the academic year.
We are hoping to implement a banking system where faculty members may be able to earn a course release or credit for overload pay for every 5 students supervised. Currently, we have to have 5 students enrolled in a regular course in order for the course to make.
I had planned on obtaining the same info from the list but you beat me to the punch. I hope you will share the data you collect.
Thanks for raising the issue.

TIPsters,
Im trying to collect some data on how (or whether) institutions compensate faculty for supervising undergraduate independent research projects. Id appreciate it if you could take a minute to answer the following questions (please respond to me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]): 1. does your institution compensate you (either financially or with course release) for supervising undergrad independent research projects; 2. if so, how does the compensation work; 3. and if so, are there different plans in different arts and science departments.
Ill post a summary of the responses, so please dont clog up mailboxes
with replies to TIPS.
Thanks in advance,
Susan Rakowitz ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Fairfield University
