I used "I Hate Myself for Loving You" by Joan Jet and the Blackharts to wake students up in an 8:00 o'clock class. Then we analyzed the lyrics using psychoanalytic concepts. The song's main theme fits the psychoanalytic model of depression and it even has a dream in it. I'm sure Joan her associate were in analysis when they wrote the song. Her manager even sent me a good copy of the video and permission to use it in my classes. I also used Sinead O'Conner's "Nothing Compares 2 U" to illustrate cognitive therapy of depression. There is a clear sense of depression in the song and several nice cognitive distortions that fit the Beck or Ellis ABC model. Bob Grossman Kalamazoo College [EMAIL PROTECTED]
