Well, now, Syd's problem wasn't that he merely wrote songs about mental illness.
But now that you mention it, I must nominate a Pink Floyd somg from the Syd Barrett days -- "Arnold Layne" (had a strange hobby....) You'll haave to listen to the song to find out what it was). And is "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" a song about feelings of anomie? :-)
