According to Ronald Clarks biography, Freud told Ernest Jones
"Yes, America is gigantic, but a gigantic mistake." (Quoted by Ernest
Jones, *Free Associations: Memories of a Psychoanalyst*, 1959, p. 191)

On similar lines, Freud told Sachs: "America is the most grandiose
experiment the world has seen, but, I am afraid, it is not going to be a
success." (Reported by Hanns Sach, *Freud: Master and Friend*, 1945, p.
84)

Max Eastman reported that Freud advised him to write a book on "The
Miscarriage of American Civilization": "You will find out the causes and
tell the truth about the whole awful catastrophe." (Quoted in Max Eastman,
*Heroes I have known: Twelve Who Lived Great Lives*, 1942, p. 272)

It would seem that Freud had a slight antipathy towards the United States.
