This has been going on in the APA for a very long time, and is the reason for the existence of the APS. If everyone lets their membership to the APA lapse in protest, maybe something will happen, but given that the APA is actually an industry guild rather than a professional society, it is doubtful.
Right.
There are more practitioners than academics, so it really would take a wholesale exodus which is highly unlikely.
What we really need is a medical model: some strong contingencies requiring scientific support for clinical practices.
