The Wednesday edition of the NY Times had an interesting short piece about 
the popular belief that folks that are dying tend to do so around 
significant personal dates or holidays.  From the article:

"The common perception that terminally ill people can hang on to life 
through important religious or personal days is more romance than reality, 
researchers are reporting."
