I know many listmembers supervise undergraduate research. Below is a description of a summer research program with benefits for students and their mentors. Thank you in advance for alerting any students who might be interested.
The Psychology Department of Buffalo State College (SUNY) is pleased to offer the sixth annual Summer Research Program funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
Program Overview: Each year ten outstanding undergraduates are accepted as fellows to participate in a paid, high-caliber, integrated eight-week learning experience designed to develop research skills in behavioral science and to stimulate interest in careers in mental health. Students typically work on a topic chosen prior to the program in collaboration with their home institution mentor. By the end of the summer, they will have received advanced instruction in research methodology and will develop a high-quality research proposal that they then carry out at their home institution over the coming year.
In accordance with the NIMH R25 grant, the philosophy underlying the program is that a solid undergraduate grounding in the conduct of research, including developing the ability to pose meaningful research questions, learning the methodological skills to answer them, and acquiring the appreciation for a sustained and disciplined spirit of inquiry, is critical to success in graduate school and a scientific career.
Additional Benefits for Students: Students earn academic credits and receive tuition, campus housing, and a $2,000 stipend. Travel funds are available for students to present their research at to professional conferences. Almost all students end up making such presentations and some have published their research.
Benefits for Mentors: Travel funds are also available for mentors. Many faculty members have appreciated the increased understanding and productivity students demonstrate after going through the program.
