I, too, am Emeritus in a manner of speaking but am still working full time and drive a lot, and I drive as fast as most of the young whippersnappers who are on the highway. (My father always told me that it was best to keep up with the flow, and I did just that for 6.5 years around the DC beltway - four lanes, bumper to bumper at speeds up to 75 miles an hour putting me in mind of the Daytona 500.)
turn out, as a group, to drive as well as they seem to. To be sure,
they've been around longer than the others, but, at the same time, the
bad drivers in that cohort have managed to already kill off themselves
or each other before they aged to the point where they could be included
in the elderly segment of the samples. (sort of an evol psyc

The statistics National Transportation and Safety Board in the US of A support A as the correct answer, which I did answer correctly. I always deal with accident statistics in my developmental statistics course when I get to the Aging section. Maybe it does have something to do with the fact that the really bad drivers do kill themselves off at an earlier age so are no longer included in the mix. It should be pointed out that the "older driver" category typically consists of everyone over 65 while the categories for younger drivers are much more narrow. There might be some effect as a result of that. Finally, I am a very strong advocate that older drivers (and others who fall into a disabled category because of birth defect, injury, or whatever) be tested on a regular basis for vision and reaction time -- IF we have some empirical evidence which suggests that reaction times worse than some established level is associated strongly with being an unsafe driver. So for all of you over-analyzers out there, A is the correct answer.
