Hello Michael and TIPS readers,
I take points off for spelling and grammar only when it is big time
(not just one or two words) but instead an obvious case of neglect in
trying to spell correctly. But then, at a community college, we must be
aware that there are some students who are doing their very best and
have not yet had a teacher who helped them find the way to success.
These students do not need punishment (points deducted) they need
notations where improvement is needed and encouragement for, "So much
done well." When improvement is noticed a few x-credit points is a good
idea. But then, there is our rapidly growing problem of cheating. If
improvement goes from mediocre to genius do something like a Google or
TurnIn check.
When the problem is the result of "Spell Check/Grammar Check" I
usually just make a strong comment telling the student to pay attention
to what Spell Check or Grammar Check are suggesting when it is clear
that their errors are the result of clicking the mouse without
considering the suggestion. I don't take many points off (usually 2
points). With spelling, grammar, sentence construction and essay
organization I suggest to the student that they go to our Writing Center
to have the writing paraprofessionals review their paper with them
before they turn it in for grading. The writing Center gets FTE credit
for their help with each student, the student gets an opportunity to
learn spelling and grammar tricks in a pleasant, encouraging environment
and I, the teacher, have fewer spelling/grammar problems to deal with or
"just ignore" hoping they will learn spelling and grammar in English
classes. I have a big guilt/time problem just skipping the
spelling/grammar problems.

Just some compassionate thoughts, Laura
