Dear TIPSters,

I have to donate my two cents to the conversation on spelling. I do
deduct points for spelling and grammar mistakes, and I think this is
something we do (or should) teach our students if only by example. I
make it clear in my syllabus that I will deduct points for these types
of errors as well as a failure to use APA formatting (particularly for
references). Furthermore, I wouldn't give them a syllabus or a textbook
that didn't use proper spelling, grammar, and accurate references. Sure,
we all make some errors, and I don't necessarily deduct points for word
choice, etc., but I think proofreading is a skill that needs to be
developed early on and should be practiced at every possible point in
time. Why not encourage that by taking off a few points? (I set aside
about 5 points per paper for grammar, spelling, and APA references.)
