Getting back to Erich Fromm, judging by his history I would guess he was a non-practising Jew. (Incidentally Jews can become Catholics or whatever, what about the "Jews for Jesus" crowd? -- well, I don't know if it's as many as a "crowd" -:) )
It's evident from *The Art of Loving* that Fromm was influenced by Buddhist philosophy and meditational practices.
