Michael et al.: So far as I know, Bettelheim (nicknamed "Brutalheim" by some
of his critics) was quite fluent in English when he wrote the book, although
some TIPSters may know more about this issue than I (certainly, in
interviews I saw with Bettelheim when he was alive, he was quite fluent in
English, although he retained a strong accent; if I recall correctly, one
interesting piece of trivia about him is that he made a brief cameo
appearance in Woody Allen's film "Zelig"). Digging around the Web just a
bit, he appears to have written the "The Empty Fortress" in in 1967, 28
years after he emigrated to the U.S. from Austria in 1939, so I wouldn't
think that language barriers would be a problem. Moreover, I'd argue that
the lengthy discussions and references in "The Empty Fortress" don't leave
much, if any, rooom for doubt that Bettelheim was referring explicitly to
autism, not schizophrenia.

Michael et al: Bettelheim's beautifully written, poignant, and in my view
exceedingly dangerous book, "The Empty Fortress," dealt with infantile
autism, not childhood schizophrenia, although some critics have charged
(based on his case descriptions) that many of his "autistic" children were
probably misdiagnosed children with schizophrenia.

How do you control for the translation variable? After all, ideas
developped by non-English speaking authors may be lost in translation. Was
he fluent in English when he came to the U.S?
I know that some of his writings were published in the Ladies
Home Journal at that time.
