Ah! I am quite familiar with the mastery vs performance goal orientations. I
have read the more recent literature in this field, c. the last 10 years.
People like Harakiewicz and Pintrich to name a couple. but I think that is
different than Keller's use of behavioral techniques of teaching. What I've
been reading is more along the lines of how goals impact learning and what we
can do in the classroom to enhance mastery goals. Again, quite different from
the sort of demonstration of mastery that I think I gleaned from the obit.

Thanks for the education.

Now, who are the Cones??????

Who in the world are Al Cone, Donna Cone and Fred Keller????????????????

Here's an obit of Fred Keller from 1996 http://www.columbia.edu/cu/record/archives/vol21/vol21_iss17/record2117.28.html

Check out the recent and near retirees in your department. There's bound to be a (possibly closet) Kellerian among them. Is there someone who likes to talk about students "mastering" the material, rather than becoming merely "comepetent" in it? "Self-paced learning?" Or, more ominously, "The Plan"? Then they are probably Kellerians.

Keller was Harvard-trained (1931) behaviorist who spent most of his career at Columbia U. and focused on education.
