I'm supervising a student doing her honors research this semester. She is collecting data among women in a domestic violence shelter. The questionnaires are anonymous so we only have the information that we collected (no way to go back and gather more information). Now to my question. One of the participants is 17 years old and married. Is a married person an adult and therefore does not need permission from his/her parents to be a research participant? That is, can she give her own consent to participate?
