In any event, he was bound to get killed. I have a good friend who died this spring while surveying land for a mining company, up here in the Yukon. The line he was tracing happened to pass approximately 5 meters away from a grizzly den, who happened to have two cubs. The den was impossible to see, and the sow simply did her mother thing. Apparently, it was relatively quick, although different versions exist.

So to see that a man will voluntarily seek immersion with grizzly bears is somewhat beyond me. Bears are great to cuddle with in the Teddy version, not in the wild! I can see Dian Fossey doing it with Silverback gorillas, since they are our close cousins after all. And even then… But not bears. And as Tasha says, doing it against all the experts’ advice is not very wise either!

I can't do any kind of armchair diagnosis, but the movie really disturbed me. If not diagnosable, the guy was really annoying! When the people who do tracking and in-depth research, wildlife protection, etc. of grizzly bears for a living tell you that you are doing something destructive and wrong with the bears, and yet you continue on your own personal mission to "become a bear", there's got to be some narcissism and grandiosity present!

Have any of you seen the movie Grizzly Man, a pseudo-documentary about a
man, Timothy Treadwell, who lived with bears up in Alaska? If so, just
wondering what you thought of his mental state? Would he qualify for a
DSM diagnosis? Just curious... thanks!
