This Week in the History of Psychology "This Week in the History of Psychology," a new weekly podcast written and produced by Christopher Green of York University (Toronto, Canada), has been officially launched. The first episode of the series covers the week of August 28 to September 3 and features an interview with Raymond Fancher about Sigmund Freud's only speaking engagement in the United States (at Clark Unviersity in 1909). It can be found at the series' home website at http://www.yorku.ca/christo/podcasts/ and on iTunes (search "This Week in the History of Psychology"). Subsequent episodes will be released on a weekly basis throughout the 2006-2007 academic year (but for a short break in the weeks around the winter solstice). The primary aim of "This Week in the History of Psychology" is to delve a little more deeply into the discipline than the textbooks do, while making the experience simple and enjoyable. The focus of each episode is an interview with a noted expert on a featured event that occurred during that week in psychology's past -- for instance, Malcolm Macmillan on the real story of Phineas Gage's famous head injury, Alexandra Rutherford on the public image cultivated by B. F. Skinner, and Wayne Viney on the impact of the publication of William James' Principles of Psychology. In addition, each episode begins with brief descriptions of several events from that week in psychology's past, and ends with a celebration of the week's birthdays and other anniversaries (most of these drawn from Warren Street's "Today in the History of Psychology" website). Instructors of courses on the history of psychology may wish to assign the series to their students, either as the equivalent of an outside reading, as the basis for a weekly discussion period, or in some other way. Each episode is 25-30 minutes in length and is available to all completely free of charge. They can be found as mp3 files, which can be easily downloaded and played on most computers as well as on iPods and other portable mp3 players. Regards, -- Christopher D.
