I can't comment on the golf story but here is a report with recent info
about HM.
Puzzling Thoughts for H. M.: Can New Semantic Information Be Anchored to
Old Semantic Memories? Skotko, Brian G.; Kensinger, Elizabeth A.;
Locascio, Joseph J. et al.; Neuropsychology, Vol 18(4), Oct 2004. pp.
756-769.
This is a very interesting experiment. HM has solved crossword puzzles
since he was 15 and continues to do so today. The basic question was
how well HM did on crossword puzzles involving information prior to 1953
(date of surgery) and puzzle requiring information after 1953.
Some aspects of the results are predictable. HM did very well with the
pre-1953 puzzles and very poorly with the post-1953 puzzles. In
addition, there was no improvement with repeated encounters with a
post-1953 puzzle.
However, if the clue involved a post-1953 clue which pointed to pre-1953
information then he showed improvement with repeated encounters with
that clue. An example would be "assassinated American president" for
Kennedy.

I cross-posted this to psychteach but expect an earlier answer here.
I have heard that HM has learned to play golf but has no conscious
awareness of it. Is this a true anecdote or what Susan Clancy calls an
"Irish Fact"--something that should be but isn't. Does anyone on the
list know?
Thanks
