All right, rephrase my sentence as "Students do not
only learn from reading, but from discussing what
they've read." Better?

Though, arguably, I do wonder if most college students
are capable of learning anything about a given
phenomenon through reading a memoir about it.
Generally they do need extra help--in the form of
discussions or writing assignments--to apply abstract
concepts to concrete examples.
