The details are murky. Rhine was a member of the Psychology department at Duke. Somewhere about 1962 he obtained money to found an independent institute called the Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man. FRNM opened its doors in about 1965 and was located literally across the street from Duke's East Campus (the psychology department was located on East campus at that time). FRNM was renamed the Rhine Research Center in 1995. The building was sold to Duke in 2002 and the Center has moved to another location in Durham.

It may be mere coincidence but the Rhine Research Center is now located across from the Millenium Motel (cue the theremin...)
