Re German, I'll happily defer to anyone more knowledgeable on the subject, but according to the (massive!) Collins/Pons Deutsch/English: English/German dictionary the German word for "scientist" is Wissenschaftler(in) [m/f] [or more strictly Naturwissenschaftler(in)], and for "scholar" is Gelehrte(r) [m/f]. No doubt there is overlap in their use, but evidently it is not the case that in German the word for "scholar" and "scientist" are the same.
