Following up on Don's good idea, I also tried Psych Abstracts (PsycINFO),
but with restrictions. I searched only the past five years (for
"influence on the current literature") and limited the search to
empirical studies only ("must be scientific").
The results:
Freud: 2246 hits
Piaget: 2466 hits
Bingo. We have a winner in the " current influence on scientific
psychology" department, and it's Piaget over Freud by a nose. Piaget had
a 10% greater number of hits than Freud. The difference isn't as great as
I thought it might be, but it'll do. It makes a nice contrast with the
immense advantage on hits Freud receives over Piaget in the Googlosphere,
where popular culture resides.
