We have around 10K - and no real lab space (we aren't even really near the main campus!). We did have a separate building with lab space - but that building was condemned and was to be turned into parking spaces (but that hasn't happened either - so just a condemned mildewy building). We were also promised lab space in a new building, but that has been squelched as well. We do have some meeting rooms that we can use for research, but nothing that you could put equipment in. We have a 3-4 teaching load and are expected to do research.

Good morning all!

As Chair of our department I have been asked to produce a document describing our department's current status, our goals, and the major obstacles to achieving our goals. One thing that I've identified and mentioned in many previous reports is lack of lab space assigned to Psychology faculty. So, I'd like to ask, how many of you are at institutions where you have no assigned lab space? Do you feel that not having a lab hampers your professional development? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW - Shepherd is a fairly small institution of about 4500 students. We have 4 full-time faculty and about 170 Psychology majors (and about another 90 students who minor in Psychology). Within the past two years we moved from being Shepherd College to Shepherd University and with that has come an increasing emphasis on publication. I'm trying to make the case that, at least in Psychology, publication means data collection, and that data collection is hampered by not having a lab (we won't even mention the 12-hour teaching load each semester).

Best to everyone,
Larry
