But, it has always been my assumption that whatever effectiveness this technique has is almost entirely attributable to lowering anxiety by having the person focusing on a single (pleasant) idea, rather than allowing the mind beginning to race (from potential problem to potential problem) and panic, which would impair performance. I suspect that any practice that prevents panic and lowers anxiety would work just as well. (Lots of baseball players have been known to use a bit of alcohol.)
