Would highly recommend "Next of Kin" by Roger Fouts. He was the graduate
assistant for the Gardiners who followed through on teaching Washoe sign
language. He has turned his work with chimps into a life-long project and,
in addition to collecting fascinating data on chimps' language and
cognitive abilities, he also provides a provocative perspective on the
issue of animal rights. Very sorry to hear the concerns about Koko but
clearly we need to learn what is and what is not reality. Washoe IS NOT A
FRAUD in any sense of the word, as those who expose themselves to the
research with chimps and the use of sign language will learn.
