I am not a clinical person, nor do we have a grad program, but based on MANY 
years of MANY students who have applied to them, the MOST important background 
your son needs is proof of ability to do research, i.e., preferably a first 
author research paper in at least a 2nd tier journal. Second, third author 
would be OK. 

That is not at daunting as it sounds if he can link up over intersession or 
summer with someone and volunteer in their lab AND generate an idea that he can 
carry out. It's not all that hard with the proper mind set that research is 
nothing more nothing less than finding a reasonably correct answer to a 
question that really interests you. The rest is just mechanics.

So he might want to take a research methods in psych course ASAP.
