Regarding the question below, I generally subscribe to the claim that the more time a student spends in contact with the course material, the more the student will learn (and retain) from the experience. So using the end-of-semester time to review the whole course should result in greater retention of course content (as a whole) than your alternative--studying only the last 3 or 4 chapters.
