I used Julien's A Primer of Drug Action for several years, but it is so poorly written that I finally abandoned it.

You could try Ksir et al., Drugs, Society and Human Behavior, which I have also used in the distant past. It is easy to read, but a bit simplistic.

The one I use now is Meyer and Quenzer, Psychopharmacology: Drugs, the Brain, and Behavior

Take a look at Robert Julien's "A Primer of Drug Action."

When I taught Drugs & Human Behavior (10-12 years ago), I decided
against that one, but it's hard to recall specifically why I did so.
I think I found some minor inaccuracies and thought he spent too much
time on barbiturates (er, perhaps I should rephrase that).

I never did find a really satisfactory textbook for that course. I
settled on David Grilly's _Drugs and Human Behavior_ <http:// www.amazon.com/Drugs-Human-Behavior-David-Grilly/dp/0205443621/>,
which was strong scientifically, but somewhat dry in format and
presentation. That was the second edition; maybe it's been spruced up
by now.
